40 Years of Statistics 1969 - 2009

On December 17th and 18th 2009, the Faculty of Statistics will celebrate its 40th anniversary.
Several events will take place at the Santa Caterina Campus and the University Central Buildings.
Anthony Davison will inaugurate the 25th cycle of the PhD School in Statistics while the book on the 40 years of activity of the Faculty of Statistics will be presented to the public.
Anthony Davison and Mario Draghi will be awarded a laurea honoris causa. Mario Draghi, the governornor of the Bank of Italy will meet students and teachers from the Faculties of Statistics and the School of Economics. All participating students will then be asked to present their student ID (libretto universitario).

Famous statisticians

The Faculty of Statistics of the University of Padua was honoured to host some of the most eminent and qualified Italian statisticians of all times. 

Corrado Gini (1884 - 1965) taught in Padua from 1913 to 1925 and coordinated the newly established Statistics Centre - Centro di Statistica. He was then appointed in Rome and initiated his engagement as director of the new Italian Institute of Statistics, later called Istat. 

Odoardo Cucconi (1920 - 1982) started to work as a University teacher after a long and successful professional career. He was very appreciated for his original teaching approach, he was able to catch the attention of his pupils by being spontaneous, simple and yet effective.

Welcome to the Faculty of Statistics!

The Faculty of Statistics in Padua is among the largest and most important ones in Italy. It is renowned for its excellence in both teaching and research. 

Faculty members are internationally respected academics specialized in all areas of statistical activity, such as statistical theory, applied statistics, official statistics, social statistics, demography, economics, economic statistics, econometrics, business and management studies, finance, computer science and mathematics. 

The Faculty is responsible for all the learning activities, while the Department of Statistics focuses on research, which is undertaken by several research groups and is oriented to both applied and theoretical statistics. The Department supports one of the oldest Italian PhD programmes in Statistics.

Did you know that...

An independent Statistics Centre was established in Padua since 1913; it then became an Institute of Statistics and a School of Statistics in 1927. At the time it was offering two-year courses and awarding diplomas.
